Local legend has it that King Arthur’s Queen Guinevere was a prisoner here of the Pictish King Mordred. Alyth developed throughout the 19th century both due to its textiles industry and the coming of the railway. Always a popular tourist destination due to its location and the founding of a golf course at the end of the 19th century with the original 9 hole course designed by Old Tom Morris from St Andrews and extended to 18 holes in 1934,with a further two clubs added in the area. The town today has an array of shops, bars and cafés. It is close to Blairgowrie, Kirriemuir and Dunkeld and the coast at Arbroath is easily reachable.
